Words With All Five Vowels

By Najam Us Saqib, Software Engineer · Last verified 28 October 2026

The companion page to this one found 121 words in our list with no vowels at all. The other extreme is more crowded but still selective: 2,462 of the list's 172,823 words contain all five vowels, A, E, I, O and U, at least once each. Narrow the test and the crowd thins fast. Seven hundred and seventeen words hold each vowel exactly once, with no repeats. Six hold them once each and in alphabetical order. Two hold them once each in reverse. Every set on this page is complete for the list named, and one famous word is missing from all of them, which the shortest-words section explains rather than hides.

The shortest: seven letters, three words

WordMeaning
EULOGIAA word of blessing or praise, the Greek root behind 'eulogy'
MIAOUEDMeowed, as a cat does (past tense of miaou)
SEQUOIAOne of the giant conifer trees of California

No word of five or six letters in this list contains all five vowels. That makes the internet's favourite answer to the shortest-word question, EUNOIA, unusable here. EUNOIA is a genuine English word (Greek for goodwill, especially an author's goodwill toward an audience) and it appears in standard dictionaries at six letters. The ENABLE list simply never picked it up, the way it never picked up QI. Our tools will not find it, so this page reports the tie that the list actually contains and names the absence, instead of copying the famous answer into a list where it does not belong.

The in-order club: six words

These are the only words in the list where A, E, I, O and U each appear exactly once and in that order:

WordMeaning
ARSENIOUSRelating to compounds in which arsenic is trivalent (chemistry)
FACETIOUSCleverly amusing in tone; treating serious things as a joke
ABSTEMIOUSSparing in eating and drinking; moderate
ABSTENTIOUSGiven to abstaining (a rare cousin of abstemious)
FACETIOUSLYIn a facetious way
ABSTEMIOUSLYIn an abstemious way

The club has a tell. Every member ends in IOUS or IOUSLY, because that ending delivers I, O and U in the correct order inside four letters, leaving the stem only the A and E to supply, in that order, ahead of it. FACETIOUS does it with F-A-C-E-T. ABSTEMIOUS does it with A-B-S-T-E-M. Once you see the mechanism, the six stop looking like miracles and start looking like the only shapes that could pass the test, which in a list this size they provably are.

Reverse order: two words

Run the vowels backwards, U, O, I, E, A, each exactly once, and the list returns just two words. UNCOMPLIMENTARY is the trivia regular: un-c-O-mpl-I-m-E-nt-A-ry, its five vowels stepping down in perfect reverse. SUBCONTINENTAL is the find of this page: s-U-bc-O-nt-I-n-E-nt-A-l, fourteen letters long, doing the same trick with its A held back to the thirteenth of its fourteen positions. Backwards is rarer than forwards for a structural reason. English loves to end words with A-adjacent material and start them with UN and SUB, so the reverse pattern has to fight the language's habits the whole way through the word.

The wider sets, for scale

The 717 words with each vowel exactly once are not all curiosities. EDUCATION and REGULATION are members, nine and ten letters of everyday vocabulary that most people never notice are doing something exact. The full 2,462 with all five vowels in any arrangement peak at thirteen letters (376 words), because length gives vowels room to accumulate. And the strictness is not mainly about repeats. Relax the exactly-once rule and the order club still barely grows: only 28 of the 2,462 words run A, E, I, O, U in order with repeats allowed, and only 6 run in reverse. Order is the rare thing, not tidiness. For racks that lean the other way entirely, the words with no vowels page holds the mirror list, and the Word Unscrambler will sort out any specific rack from this same word list.

Vowel-majority words

One more cut through the same set, because it changes how the words feel. Of the 2,462 words containing all five vowels, 342 have more vowels than consonants, and 78 are at least three-fifths vowel. The three shortest words on this page sit at the top of that scale: EULOGIA, MIAOUED and SEQUOIA are each five vowels held together by just two consonants. Words like that are why vowel-heavy racks in tile games are not the disaster beginners take them for. SEQUOIA is what a Q, five vowels and an S become; EUPHORIA is five vowels carried by just three consonants, P, H and R, and is a word most players have actually heard of. The vowel pages of this site, this one and the no-vowels list, are really about the same skill: reading a rack by its balance instead of by its first impression.

Questions

What is the shortest word with all five vowels?

In this word list, seven letters, and three words tie: EULOGIA, MIAOUED and SEQUOIA. No word of five or six letters in the 172,823-word list contains all five vowels. The answer usually given to this question is EUNOIA, at six letters, and it is a real English word found in standard dictionaries. It is simply not in the ENABLE list this site's tools use, so our answer has to be the seven-letter tie, stated with its list attached.

Which words have all five vowels in alphabetical order?

Six, when each vowel must appear exactly once: ABSTEMIOUS, ABSTEMIOUSLY, ABSTENTIOUS, ARSENIOUS, FACETIOUS and FACETIOUSLY. FACETIOUS and ABSTEMIOUS are the famous pair; the other four are their adverb forms and two rarities. Every one of the six leans on an ending in IOUS or IOUSLY, which supplies the I, O and U in the right order in a single stroke.

Is there a word with the vowels in reverse order?

Two, under the same strict rules (each vowel exactly once, appearing U, O, I, E, A): SUBCONTINENTAL and UNCOMPLIMENTARY. UNCOMPLIMENTARY is the one trivia lists usually name. SUBCONTINENTAL is the quieter find, and it is the longer word doing the harder trick, because A's natural home in that word family comes early and the A here must wait until the end.

Does Y count as a vowel for this page?

No. Every count here uses the five letters A, E, I, O and U only, which is what makes the lists exact and checkable. Y does vowel work in English spelling (the companion page on words with no vowels is built on that fact), but including it here would blur a clean test into a judgement call. Under the strict test, the numbers are 2,462, 717, six and two.
